Can anybody give advice on my current situation . I have been offered by a friend in a large family firm a role to provide HS and E advice but i'm not qualified to provide a consultancy role but i am happy to assist their on site person who has an environmental degree but no health and safety qualification.Until such a time as he attains relevant qualifications Two points that concern me 1. Would this arrangement satisfy management regs ?. Whereby i am qualifed with Techiosh Nebosh management construction environmental certs and the on site person have experience of their industry. 2. What title would best describe the role and is it advisable to take the offer any help would be great

This is a difficult one for people to pass comments and due to this I feel the answers will vary - Assisting the guy in place for the environment element answers itself for me - he has the experience and qualification you comment.
Safety element - The fact you have come on here and been open and honest is a very good sign of competence - understanding ones own limitations. If you have the necessary experience to support the Con Cert yes this will satisfy the management regs. Experience is the key here.

Cheers for replying my experience is on Nuclear and the offer of a job is in a different industry but same sort of tasks activites in fairly related areas. Assist was my thinking as well. Experience is the key your absolutely right its always difficult to quantify whether your own experience translates to other businesses . Thanks again for the input, any other thoughts welcome.

Lay down the two areas in list form on the same sheet of paper and see what crosses over as many areas are basicially the same irrespective

Well the role crosses over in lots of ways really anything from confined spaces to heavy lifting ops , manual handling (I'm Rospa manual handling trainer) so i'm reasonably confident that there will be no situation, without naming the company or the business that will pull any surprises. Health and safety on Nuclear pretty much has aspects of every type of health and safety situation you could find.In my original question i should have clarifed that i have gone from Union safety rep into health and safety full time.

would you/they be working in the nuclear island? Just an example question to get a feel for the risk you would be taking on should you take up the job offer

Sorry i don't understand what you mean by Nuclear island . They do work on Nuclear sites occasionally since they carry out recycling and waste management .

In my time the part of the site that is /was contaminated was called/is still called the 'nuclear island' as you can work on a nuclear site all your life without going into a contaminated area; so if U work in a contaminated area U need the services of an RPA and RPS as well as all the other factors e.g. Work at Height, COSHH, Fire etc
Most sensible people can become an RPS after experience & a weeks course whereas an RPA requires an appropriate advanced degree in a proper degree subject [I would buy in the RPA]

RCA Radiologically Controlled Area is the term i'm familiar with , and the jobs involves no tasks conducted in designated areas.Two individuals on site are trained Radiological Protection Advisors due to the use of a Spectrum Analyser in certain tasks . the Site is not a Nuclear site but they do handle some scrap metal from Nuclear sites but rarely.

Rod, would you actually be employed by this company or are we talking about you doing the work as a self-employed person? There are insurance implications if it is the latter, which I won't go into the details of unless you confirm that is the situation.

Heather thats a really good point !! i hope its just on a short term fixed contract basis and they sought out Paye , but its certainly something i will put to them . I think they are covered under their insurance for any exigencies , but i will definately put that to them thanks ;)))

Rod - the issue is whether you are covered under their PL insurance or have to get your own PL / PI policy. It can probably be written into the contract that you are to be treated as an employee for insurance purposes. I strongly advise you push for this as PL / PI for self-employed isn't cheap!
If it does turn out they want you to be self-employed you also have to register with HMRC, pay NI contributions and do your own (simple) accounts. Much easier for you if they can take you under their PAYE to avoid all this, especially if it's only short term.
I'd say take the opportunity - it sounds as though you are very well aware of not acting beyind your limitations and experience and jobs are few and far between right now! Good luck.

Thanks Heather i don't think i would take the position as a self employed person if that is the only option on the table . I have been self employed for 20 years out of the last 25 so i'm not really looking to go back into self employment for the reasons you have already mentioned. I've actually just got an interview this morning for a full time position as a H S & E advisor role. I'm lacking the experience on admin side but having worked on Nuclear i know what good and best practice should look like. Even just the experience of an interview is well worth it . I'm sure my shortcomings were all too evident in my cv but as you say Jobs are few and far between , its all a learning curve , thanks again
