Can anyone recommend (or otherwise) electronic readers as an aid to carrying technical/legal details in pdf?

I asked this question a few weeks ago, got a few answers but nothing too substantial. I will be trialling one after Christmas and will put my review on here. I carry lots of hard copies around with me and think such a device would be really useful - if it works? I have an ipod touch and have downloaded the free ap, it looks OK but the H&S books are very expensive.

Hi, I have a Sony e reader that I have a few PDF documents on Including a couple of HSE publications (downloaded for free from HSE books). My one comment is that although text is fine on one of these devices they will reformat tables and diagrams unless set to the smallest text size which typically will make the words too small to read. so useful but only up to a point. Now, if someone produced an A4 size screen on an e reader that might work but all manufacturers seem to want to do is make screens smaller. Hope this helps, Jim

Chris The Kindle app on the ipod will give access to exactly the same information as the Kindle reader, you can also manage these docs online via your Amazon account. If you do buy an expensive book it will be available to you on all platforms tho!!! With your ipod you should be able to store pdfs from HSE books and also view word docs, excel docs and PowerPoint presentations etc. My point is if you purchase a doc editor then you can also amend them on site too! That way you can use your ipad / phone / ipod to do work instead of viewing files, it's the way forward :)

We have some "tablet" PCs which you can carry around with you and they are touch screen but means that you have a larger screen to help you. I have also seen once a portable computer whereby the screen lids twists round and can then be laid flat so as to act as a touch screen tablet. Think the ipad probably is the updated version of these and gives quite a good size screen to be able to look at documents, guidance and spreadsheets.

It would be handy to keep copies of the DCLG fire guides, since they are free to download anyway. I have the books but having them on site without a hefty ruck sack would be very handy along with a few of the free guides from the HSE website.

There are various "Minibooks" on the market at the moment (about the size of an A5 personal organiser) that will do do this job nicely, and they're coming down in price. The one I bought a couple years ago for £170 is now available for about £70

The whole point is to reduce the size/quantity of what I/we carry around. If I go for the ipad that's larger than the ipod or mobile phone. I might as well just take the laptop with an Internet dongle? However I don't want to take anything expensive onto site where I may have to leave it for a time. The kindle has a 6" (diagonal measure) screen and the thing will fit into my back pocket. I will be getting an iphone next month when my current contract allows, I may just use that as suggested above. Good discussion this one.

Chris, I have the iPad, I bought it to undertake inspections, it's really good because I have iBooks installed. Within iBooks I have all the HS(G)s, IND(G)s etc Also it has the facility to edit word documents whilst on site. It wasn't cheap but it saves me hours and hours of admin. I would recommend it to anyone. Barney#1

Hi Chris How about thwart apple and go for the smaller Samsung Galaxy Tab (7" screen I think) Your ipod will do most of what the iphone does tho, it just needs a wifi connection!! Ok a few questions, Are you happy to just read docs - is limited to ebook format and pdf OK? Do you need Internet access? If so is wifi OK or do you need mobile net? (You could use your phone for this with a laptop tho) what size screen do you need? My phone is OK but difficult for two people to share. What's the biggest size you can handle? An IPAD is like an A4 folder really, not that big IMHO. A smart phone fit's in your pocket. would the ability to use GPS, edit docs and email be useful? Would it be useful to show presentations on the screen? Or videos! Would the ability to play angry birds on your break be useful (sells it to me :) ) What's your budget - you can get a reader for about £50 on eBay, the kindle is nice but designed for reading, tablets are going to be a few hundred for basic - or about £500 for the works. hmmm only you know what you need...

teh-boy thanks for all that info, you are right in saying that only we know what we want but it is good to have lots of views before deciding. Hope you don't mind me saying that your avatar puts me off reading your posts, I always think something nasty will happen to me ha ha.

:) I've had that since day one, not changing it now, you'll have to miss out on my gems of wisdom or risk the consequences. It's nice to have a chat about something a bit different. However reading my posits I'm not sure how I managed to secure a wife - safety manager, geek, trekie :) Phone or wife.... It's a tough call*! *disclaimer - I have of course risk assessed this response and would like to add I would choose wife every time**. **conditions apply

I use the iBooks app on my iPhone, which does come in handy, especially as I always have it on me. As soon as you click download from HSE books it asks you if you want to open it in iBooks, which automatically saves it to you library. The only downside is the text size on the screen is quite small, but it works for me.
