Hi all, I have been working in construction for over ten years, am a qualified scaffolder and running my own sites. I passed nebosh construction cert earlier this year, I am looking to go into an adviser role with one of the bigger firms. Do you think I am wishful thinking? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I took the NEBOSH general 6 years ago and also took the nebosh construction 2 years ago, I have found it very difficult to get in with the bigger firms.
If you look at the vacancies advertised they are asking for more and more certificates, so much so I am now working towards my grad status with an aim to get to chartered as this will give me what is required and allow me to apply on an equal footing with other H&S professionals.
However saying that I am doing it via the NVQ route which you may difficult if you are not in an H&S role currently
To cut it short I personally believe you need to get to grad status as a minimum, there are smaller companies who take on with the nebosh cert as a minimum and please keep applying for these positions.
What ever you decide good luck

Whilst you have good practical skills on one construction area, you probably are a bit light on the qualifications. You will see some experienced safety professionals out of work & some well qualified people cannot get any of the jobs.
If you are still working, maybe take a longer view, keep studying for a higher qualification and look for an assistant type job.
We all start somewhere and spend many happy hours with face in books. Good luck.
