I contacted the HSE help line and they have no knowledge of any new or upcoming chance to legislation, that say it may be an industry standard that they do not know about.

I think this will be referring to The Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice?

I attended a branch meeting last month, a HSE inspector was in attendance and commented that HSE are visiting sites focussing on temporary works.

(Every construction project has temp works).

John,

Temporary Works is referenced in CDM2007 but is covered specifically by BS5975:2008 that covers procedures & design of Class A Falsework (<3.5m in height etc) & BS EN 12812:2004 that covers Class B Falsework (>3.5m in height etc). The latter is a European Norm, the former solely a British Standard that covers the bits missed by the former!

This is a bit like TG20:08 for scaffolding with tube & fittings that fills the gaps missed by BS EN 12811 that only really considers system scaffolding widely used on the mainland.

BS5975:2004 is being updated in 2010 as is TG20 so this maybe the change in legislation you refer to although none of these are, they are guidance. The latest HSE Action Plan also shows TW as a target for 2010/11.

As ChrisBurns said, all construction projects have TW including scaffolding, hoarding, haul roads, foundations for cabins, excavations, crane bases, piling mats, tower crane bases, silo bases etc etc. All require a design either a standard solution (e.g. TG20:08) or a more complex (bespoke) design that will determine the level of design check required maybe by third parties.

Check out www.temporaryworks.info for more details. Our company has recently gone through a TW overhaul and called on the help of a guy called Peter Pallet, the international guru on TW who wrote most of the BS's including co-author of TG20:08.
