Is there any definitive rules on how often Fire Drils should be held. As the factory I work in has not held one in over a year. That is despite the fact they have taken on new employees. I am sure that I had read somewhere that if there had been changes to the workplace or workforce then drills should be carried out to assess response due to these changes. Mike

Mike, The frequency of the Fire Drill should be established through your Fire Risk Assessment. For guidance on frequency etc then reference could be made to the Fire Risk Assessment guide for Factories and Warehouses. Section 7.4 states a drill should be carried out at least annually. This however is only guidance but written with some authority. A link to the document below. http://www.communities.g...ons/fire/firesafetyrisk3

Conducting fire drills depends on the circumstances that exist within the workplace. For example in an office block it is quite reasonable to have a fire drill one or twice a year, in afactory where there are very dangerous process that need constant monitoring fire drills are not normally carried out but fire escape briefings are used instead to ensure that staff are aware of what is required should an evacuation be required. Generally as in an office thisd is quite simple, so to be honest it is horses for courses, you need to look at the criticality of the processes your workplace undertakes.

Mike I tend to have a fire drill either annually or if we have had a large influx of new personnel However when a drill is undertaken I also need to take into account who is present on site and as such may have missed the drill - I am kind though it tends to be in good weather Make sure you record it and any failures / successes are recorded and learnt from Good Luck Alan
