My posts about behavioural safety have prompted a few emails so I thought I'd share with members, very briefly what I have found out over fifteen years of doing behaviural safety workshops. After analysing hundreds of incidents and doing hundreds of workshops onshore, offshore (and with management teams too) one or more of the following behavioural traps (human factors, if you like) are involved: 1. Lack of awareness - we just don't see things 2. Unintentional pressure from supervisors and workmates - NOTE unintentional - not like the old days when it was intentional 3. Fear (of looking stupid, of being seen as lazy or incompetent, of upsetting the boss or workmates etc). 4. Loss of concentration - drifting off on autopilot 5. Diminishing the risk - making mental excuses to go ahead when we know we shouldn't 6. Future consequence blindness - not recognising how an act today can hurt people next week or next month. Behavioural safety is NOT difficult to understand. The challenge comes in how to get this message accross in a way that motivates people to change. Analysing case studies is only the first step - we humans have to wrestle with our own human nature to stop the job when we know we should. For academic colleagues there is very fertile ground for research here. I am happy to share the slides I use in the 45-minute presentation to senior colleagues, which goes into a bit more detail. Bill, I would be interested in the slides. I also find that the culture changes the thinking on safety. I train all new employees, and complete the refresher training and what tends to happen is when the employees enter the establishment they are then informed that the way they have been taught is not the way it is carried out. Therefore the training becomes secondry to the actual task.
