Accidents Attributable to the use of Mobile Phones

Dear Colleagues,
I’m looking for documented examples of accidents where the cause is attributable to the use of mobile phones but NOT relating to driving a vehicle and NOT relating to health issues from electromagnetic radiation.
As use of a mobile phone is distracting, it is foreseeable that users may, trip, slip, fall, walk into a lamp post, walk into the path of a vehicle, select the wrong control whilst operating machinery, drop the phone from height, etc, etc.
However, I’m finding it difficult to find any documented examples.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Neil.

One of the scaffolding companies (SGS?) did a training DVD based on fact whereby a scaffolder was distracted by his phone and did not secure the scaffolding. Other colleagues may be able to help with the source of the story

Hi Neil - why not create your own documentation - A risk assessment - and ban their use as a control measure in situations where you can forsee an incident / accident. Or are you looking for something to back up your reasoning?

Neil P,
No help with the documented examples I'm afraid, however, I can state that the DVD m speaks of is very good and hard hitting!

Thanks for the responses,
You're right David, just looking to reinforce our current policy and add a bit to the TBT that I deliver.
Thanks for the links - I'll have a good look and also look into purchasing the DVD.
Neil.

Network Rail have a Video where someone is hit by a train whilst on the phone It may be a bit away from what you are doing but it highlights the implications

Not an accident as such, and, in a sense, not specifically attributable to mobile phones, but I have photos of a technician servicing an automatic photographic film developing unit who places his phone on the adjacent workbench, then dons gloves, opens up the unit and starts servicing it. Mobile phone rings. Checks and sees it is his boss. Picks up the phone with his gloved hand and hold the phone to his ear, thus contaminating his skin with the photographic chemicals. I use these when training on the correct use of gloves as this is a common problem.

Neil, slightly off topic but might be useful in a TBT. I had a freind who scorched her ear whilst ironing & watching the TV. The phone rang and she had a momentary lapse of concentration & answered the iron. Not seriously hurt but very embarressed by the resulting interesting hair effects.
heres to a prosperous Happy New Year,
Nic

Neil,
Quoted in the Hickory Daily Record 21/12/92:
'Ken Charles Berger, 47, accidentally shot himself to death in December in Newton, NC, when, awakening to the sound of ringing telephone beside his bed, he reached for the phone but grabbed instead a Smith and Wesson .38 Special, which discharged when he drew it to his ear.'

All of the above are brilliant examples of harm due to mobile phone use/dependency. They should all be documented together instead of separately.
What ever did we do before they became so common?
If possible, and if you don't mind Neil P, I would like a copy of what you put together as it will be useful to us all I think.
A pm would be gratefully received. Thanks.
