HI ALL FROM THE SAND PIT, I HAVE READ WITH INTEREST OVER MANY MONTHS VARIOUS POSTS REGARDING THE PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF WHAT WE AS HSE PROFESSIONALS DO AND I COME BACK TO AN IDEA I HAD AND SUGGESTED ON HERE MANY MONTHS AGO.
WE HAVE HAD FLY ON THE WALL DOCUMENTARIES ABOUT EVERYTHING FROM PEOPLE STUCK ON A DESERT ISLAND TO A HOTEL INSPECTOR TO FOLLOWING THE MUNICIPAL SERVICES AROUND A CITY SUCH AS BRISTOL BUT NEVER ONE TO SHOW US IN OUR TRUE ROLE.
I STILL THINK THERE IS MUCH CONFUSION ABOUT WHAT A SAFETY PROFESSIONAL ACTUALLY DOES AMONGST THE WIDER POPULATION SO PERHAPS A FLY ON THE WALL DOCUMENTARY WOULD ASSIST IN THIS BY REALLY EDUCATING PEOPLE AS TO WHAT WE DO AND THAT WE ARE NOT A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS WHO WALK ROUND IN BEIGE COATS QUOTING LAW.
PERHAPS A NUMBER OF SAFETY PROFESSIONALS COULD BE FOLLOWED OVER A NUMBER OF WEEKS TO GIVE GOOD COVERAGE OF DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES-SAY......CONSTRUCTION, OFFICE, SHOPPING CENTRE, STEEL FOUNDRY, COUNCIL AND OIL & GAS.
OBVIOUSLY THERE WILL BE MANY HURDLES TO OVERCOME REGARDING "WASHING DIRTY LAUNDRY IN PUBLIC" ETC BUT I SUSPECT THERE WOULD BE SOME BENEFIT TO THAT AS WOULD MAY SHOW THE DIFFICULTIES FACING COMPANIES TRYING TO COMPLY WITH THE MASSES OF LEGISLATIVE REQUIREMENTS.
WHAT ARE THE THOUGHTS OF MY PEERS?? IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE??
REGARDS FROM DUBAI

Hi Calum, from cold and wet blighty.
The notion has been mooted before and indeed there have been some health and safety fly-on-the-wall type programmes in recent times. However, they tend to depict 'elf and safety in the negative and do nothing to promote the good work that is done by many practitioners. Unfortunately the media prefer to present our industry with contempt, until that is, a serious incident occurs and then it is all health and safety goodness.
I think we have to accept for the time being that health and safety will not be portrayed in a positive manner by the media. In the meantime there are initiatives which industry organisations, government agencies and individuals can champion to improve the practical side, as well as the image of health and safety. I believe these institutions could do much more to promote sensible health and safety, but they constrained by potential legal liabilities, hence they generally prefer to promote overly zealous practices; which in turn leads to a risk averse culture.
What is really needed to turn the tide back to sensible health and safety and a modicum of respect, is some sort of working party to examine different aspects of the industry. These would include regulation, claims, insurance, risk management, judiciary, penalties, training and so on. Each of which influence the other and therefore looking at them in isolation, or a snap shot, like Lord Yong's recent report will do no good at all. Indeed, without a structured approach more harm is just as likely to be the end result.

Hi Ray, been a long time mate.
I am inclined to agree with your thoughts although i do think we could do more to stop us being mis-represented in the media.
I agree that thinking in silo's is not the way forward and that a holistic review and alteration back about 20 years is required too.
Anyway-enough of this lunchtime dreaming-i have fun and games with 5000 guys to deal with.
Bye the way-if it make it better we had a bit of rain this morning!?!?!?!?
TTFN.

I've come to the conclusion all journalists & tv folks suffer from a massive inferiority complex. This results in them ALWAYS trying to belittle their subjects.
I'd sooner stick red hot needles into my eyeballs than have anything to do with any of them.
Never ever talk to the press they will always misquote what you say to hype up reality

The only press relations that H & S would get is the same as that of construction i.e. Builders from H. They would scour the country for the worst possible H & S advise given. I do seem to remember that there was a documentary some years ago with a H & S advisor and if I can remember correctly a EH advisor. I seem to recall the guys were just chuckling and gigling at the advisor.
The best press is avoid it at all costs.
Wouldn't quite go as far as Walker, but agree with what he says.
