Hi all
Looking for some guidance regarding work experience and what we need to do. We are a construction management company using sub-contractors to carryout the work ie kitchen and bathroom refurbishment and have had to agree places for work experience persons of 15-16 years old which the subbies will be incontrol of ie provide the supervision etc. I can think of a few things such as Risk Assessment, school notifying parents, CRB checks for supervisors, induction, PPE issue, insurance etc but was wondering what else there is to take into account as I have always informed previos employers to steer clear of this
Regards

Presumably you've had a look here - http://www.hse.gov.uk/youngpeople/risks/
One thing I think you should look at is transportation. If the subbies use a transit van with seating for 3, and the WE person will make the team 4 strong, how will they be transported between sites. Hopefully not in the back of the van.
you might also want to check the vehicles are legal in terms of insurance, tax and license. Not strictly your responsibility in the normal course of events but you are assuming the responsibility for the child.
From claims encountered (I work in insurance) I'd say the biggest potential danger is lack of maturity and activities like disposal of old fittings. I can imagine a child would take great delight in smashing up old lavatories and cisterns and some of the old cisterns and fittings can contain asbestos.
I remember one claim involved a double glazing firm where one WE lad decided it would be great fun to break the glass with kung fu type kicks before placing in the skip. Result was a severed achillees tendon.

Hi Paul,
Is the school not arranging for an Education Business Partnership team to conduct a health and safety assesement visit on their behalf before the placement?
I go out and do such H & S visits for WE and on the whole you are looking in the right direction with RA, employers liability insurance etc.
you don't say how long is the student going to be doing WE with your subbies for, we normally say if they are there for up to 2 weeks (10 days) then CRB's are not conducted, if the student is there for more than 15 days, i.e. completing WE for one to three days a week for the school term then we recommend that CRB's are conducted and controlled by the schools. Parents are informed if there also are issues with one to one working. We give the employer a brief guide to child protection to ensure that they are aware of what they have to do to ensure both their own and that of the students well being.
