Has anyone got a really good briefing note on safety harnesses and MEWPS that they would be willing to share? I have seen the HSE and IPAF stuff but it lacks any detail on type of harness to use or pictoral images.

I would be vary wary of any training info that talks of using harnesses and restraint on flying carpets. They are NOT required. If your assessment suggests they are then I would suggest you are permitting use of an improper method of work

I would rather stand by my original contention as the ability to define exceptional is a bit hazy. IPAF have not yet defined any exceptional circumstance to my best knowledge that I would not conceive of as improper use. Flying carpets are designed only for use on resonably smooth, stable and otherwise reasonably even surfaces that are within permitted gradient limits; - traversing in the manufacturers recommended manner on slopes and only moved by a trained operative at a height below the defined max travel height. Yes there are vehicles with push out sections and removable handrails BUT these are not there to generally permit access onto the structure only to the structure. I have once used them to access onto a prepared platform area and the guardrail removed for access but even then the design ensured guardrails at all times to prevent falls.

IPAF might use the vague term exceptional but I look to the manufacturers and if they are used according to manufacturers recommendations then harnesses are not required. Any use outside of these recommendations has to seen as improper use.
