I am in the process of obtaining material safety data sheets for all products we have on site including petrol. As we have several different sites I am finding that the supplier of the petrol can differ at each site. I am aware that different manufacturers may add their own additives to their petrol but is it the case that each safety data sheet for petrol is pretty much the same in terms of hazards and for the COSHH assessment?
Many thanks

That would seem to be a fair and reasonable view point.
If we are talking petrol/fuel for normal road going vehicles, then the fuel will have been refined to meet the British Standard for that particular grade of fuel.
BSEN 228 appears to be the standard for unleaded petrol for example.
Additivies usually make up a small proportion of the overall fuel volume

In actual fact the entire quantity of petrol can be taken As an additive. The mix of various hydrocarbons can vary enormously. More with diesel, since road diesel contains Low levels of sulphur, while rebated diesel contains much higher levels. Diesel may also contain. Varying levels of Highly aromatic compounds and also vegetable based oils.

Caution with safety data sheets. Last year I reviewed a stack of safety data sheets for a client. Out of 50 only one was accurate in all respects! Many had errors that, if taken as true, could have resulted in dangerously inaccurate risk assessments. Four were for a single substance (solvent) but all four had different risk phrases and none conformed to the Approved Supply List!
Makes me wonder how accurate those much more complicated Exposure Scenarios for REACH are going to be!

Thanks to all those who replied. All the petrol we purchase is from companies who should be following the British standards so I'm happy that we can use the same COSHH assessment for identifying hazards for different stocks of petrol.
