Im looking for a quick survey of yes / no to the following questions. Do you heat your warehouse area, goods-in, goods-out etc?
I know the what the workplace temp guidelines are so no need to provide additional information on the subject.
Thanks in advance.

Commonly occupied areas (workstations, work areas) yes.
The back of the warehouse where somebody may only go twice a day to pick a part = no.

Guru,
Warehouses = No
Seperate Messroom/warehouse office = Yes
My last company had 4 seperate warehouses and a customs inspection/coldstore facility.
None were heated as it was impractical and a waste of energy as all had two doors that would allow
a 40' x 9'6" container on a trailer to be backed in and FLTs operated through them at all times.
I estimate they were 250' long x 60' wide & 40' high to give an indication of volume
All operatives were issued with cold/foul weather PPE and we considered the warehouses to be external
workspaces.
The warehouse supervisor was also a safety rep and shop steward, if he had a complaint or suggestion
we would normally discuss informally to reach a solution that we could work with.
Most of the time the system worked well and the employees got on with their jobs, did what they had to
do and were sort of left alone by management. Their manager, my safety officer and myself would pop
round regularly for a cupper and a chat. We also carried out regular formal inspections.
The safety record of warehousing was very good with the only RIDDOR accident being the safety rep missing his footing and falling off the kerb resulting in much ribbing and 5 days off work till he could walk again. Minor accidents and near misses were very low and none were attributed to cold working though in some it was a factor.
Take Care

Much the same as Safety Smurf:
Commonly occupied areas of warehouses i.e. workstations/work areas) = Yes.
The main storage parts of the warehouse (infrequent access) = No.

In the main yes we do, though with the cold weather this winter we have still had complaints from the staff.

We do. We have a Hot air system which blows from the middle and above doors, Although with 70 Bay doors, 24-7 operation all it really does is just take the chill out of the air. Its too big a space to keep warm.

Hi, I dealt with an engineering company that were really struggling to heat the warehouse, which opened up various issues relating to the dexterity of machine operators when wearing gloves. We managed to find some really good heating solutions but I'm new to the forums and not sure if I'm allowed to post the suppliers details. Anybody know??? Thanks, Alan.

We heat; not sure how effective that is at keeping the people cosy since the building is 60+ years old and the heating system pretty ancient also, but it keeps the frost off vulnerable stock lines. I do tend to bring in additional space heating if the weather is really bad...we're not totaly Dickensian.

Yes we heat all areas of the warehouse, but lose a lot of heat through open speed doors because of fork lift truck movements through them

As a point of interest, we also have an emergency heating procedure for when the installed system breaks down or can't cope.

We have gas fired heating (with convective reflectors) mounted very high near the roof of our warehouse. It is generally effective although it takes an age to warm up on a Monday in the depths of winter.
