Hi Guy's,
I hope you are all well. I am presently preparing a Working at Height Awareness presentation for our core Ccrew (offshore oil and gas installation). Can some one clarify the following two points for me please?
Swimming pool attendants - Are they covered by the regulations?
Merchant Ship Crews - Is it still the case that when at sea and under the control of the ships master, they are excluded from the regulations?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Frank

Not sure why attendants at swimming pools would be covered by working at height regulations unless they plan on jumping of the high board to save a life. I'm sure there would be more specific regulations for lifesaving. certainly my thoughts wouldn't have gone to working at height.

Morning Frank,
Without knowing the whole context of your question and without verifying by looking up the regulations I would say the quick answers are;
Swimming Pool Attendants working in UK would be covered by the current H&S legislation.
Shipping generally speaking comes under the Safety of Life at Sea which is an internationally recognised document
Take Care

http://www.oil-jobs-offs...e.com/accommodation.html
"To compensate for the hard physical work there are sports facilities such as fitness rooms, pool, billiard, or on larger facilities even a swimming pool. Some even have a cinema or shopping mall. You will also find necessities such as a medical station, doctor or a postal office."
I'm guessing bluewater is referring to the high chair / ladder type thing that swimming pool attendants sit on to give them a good view over the water.
Yes, WAH probably does apply but I cannot see any other or better alternative to this. Treat as a PUWER issue and inspect the steps / maintain as required.

Hi Blue water
The transposition of the regulatory frameworks around swimming pool management can be found in HSG 179 - "Health and safety in Swimming Pools" also the ILAM do an excellent guidance publication called "Swimming Pool and Spa Plant Manual"
The first covers working in and around the pool - the latter covers the technical risks associated with the Plant and Equipment - Flocculation, legionnela, COSHH related issues with chlorine usage, plant and equipment inspection and maintenance issues and controls.
The captain pugwash type question - have not got a clue. I will leave that to the maritime experts.

Have to admit the only place I ever saw a swimming pool is on a floating production tanker (converted oil tanker) and that was purpose built (small) never seen 1 on an exploration rig or platform except the sea itself!
Also the installation (ship) may want to check with the authority which the ship is flagged under, but unless in UK waters would not be under the WAH regs. Just SOLAS to refer to in general for sea going vessels.
