In these times of financial austerity our organisation is looking to redeploy assets (machinery) throughout it's organisation. This would mean assets redeploying from sites within the EU to sites in the US/Asia regions and vice versa. Assets would also be redeployed throughout all countries of the EU. Some assets would have been modified over time at home sites to take account of local and business requirements. We are looking for any guidance/direction that IOSH members could give us in complying with EU requirements.

One issue to be aware of is that the CE marking requirements and all that goes with them under the Machinery Directive apply to a machine on its first import into the EU. Thus bringing a second hand machine in from (for example) the US means it has to meet the Essential Safety & Health Requirements of the Directive, have a Technical File, Declaration of Conformity and so on.
Frankly I have found in the past that the costs of upgrading often make it uneconomic to bring second hand machines into the EU.
Transfer within the EU does not have the same issues.

Not really H&S but you need to be aware of different voltages and frequency's (HZ) the equipment would be designed to run on especially between EU and USA.

Another cost of asset redeployment, is the hidden cost of re training staff in machinery use, re-signing and labeling of operating instructions, dependant on primary language of operator.
