I am currently looking into the safety aspects of these type of ladders and am particularly interested to obtain the following information:

The height that the hooped ladder must extend above the top of a landing.

The maximum distance / height before an intermediate landing stage is required.

The circumstances in which a locking device is required to prevent unauthorised use / access.

Any other key H&S issues relating to these types of ladders.

Thank you.

I could be wrong but i thought there was theory that hooped ladders where more dangerous than un hopped ladders and there was some talk with doing away with hopped ladders. is this correct?

i believe intermediate staging is required every 9 mtrs from memory which falls in line with cranes.

i think locking devices to prevent unauthorized access is going to be down to local conditions we use to restrict access purely to stop unauthorized access to roof or void area. Keys where only issued with a permit to work and RA where raised.

Refer to "BS 4211:2005 with Amendment 1:2008 Specification for permanently fixed ladders"

It specifies requirements for ladders with single bar rungs intended to be fixed permanently to structures. It covers ladders fixed to, for example, chimneys, silos and bins. Requirements for associated platforms and safety hoops are also given. BS 4211 also covers permanently fixed companionway ladders.

At the bottom, the lowest hoop shall start at a height of between 2200 mm and 3000 mm above the departure area. At the top,the hoops extend up to the height of the guard-rail

For prevention of unauthorized access, consideration to be is given to the provision of suitable safeguards, e.g. locking devices, to ensure that access is only possible by authorized personnel

The height of a ladder flight between the bottom and the nearest platform not exceeding 6 metres.

Dimensions of platforms provided specifically as rest platforms at least 700 mm × 700 mm
