Hello all! I am looking into the requirements for annual fire safety awareness. We have a computer based package provided for employees who have a computer which takes on average 15 minutes to complete! we do though have a significant number, 400 employees who do not have access to a computer. Has anyone any advice and guidance on what is required for these e.g. would a 15 minute tool-box talk be sufficient or would have to be a couple of hours with demonstrations on the use of fire extinguishers etc.

i have my views but would appreciate othes

I carry out fire safety for companies and my basic fire safety course is 1-1.5 hrs long which is probaly more than most. i think you need to look at the fire risks in your premises or associated with your sector. if you are in heavy industry or engineering there may be a greater need to ensure sufficent knowledge around fire safety as the risk is higher. in an office enviroment you might not consider it that greater risk.

so long as you have covered;-

fire risks in premises
fire safety measures
action in the event of fire
method of operating manual call points
location and use of extinguishers
means for summoning fire service
persons identified to assist evacuation
persons nominated to use fire extinguishers

Clegg you have a large number of employees so I guess there are fire wardens/marshalls that have been trained separately?

You probably have a comprehensive fire procedure well written and proven through drills?

Why not take small numbers of employees away to the training room and start by going through the fire procedure and who has what responsibilities and duties. Max 45 mins.

Once all have done that then do the same but take them a little further into fire safety. It will take time but small chunks is better than trying one big bite.
