I am wondering if someone can clarify if there are any legal requirements for the use of shelving such as SWL, maintenance and inspections. The shelves are used to manually store items on of various shapes, sizes and weights.
I am unable to find any guidance relating to the subject

This question is relates to shelving only and not racking which is covered by SEMA & HSG76, to my understanding

Hi, I'm not certain about legislation, but certainly you should have the SWL identified on the racking, and a means of keeping track of the weights placed on the racking/shelving.
I think you need to check LOLER regulations and the application of SWL etc.

Hello Pad,
In short, yes there are duties under the general PUWER Regs with specific points found in the SEMA guidelines and CoPs. My assessments of shelving depend largely on their working environment and generally include factors such as:
MHE Interface/proximity
Height to width ratio
Ground or mezzanine
Manufacturer
SWL
Historical damage.
Hope this helps and drop me a line if you need any specifics.
Regards,
Gordon

What are you storing and what is the heaviest item? Just make sure you don't exceed manufacturer's recommendations. As you have already realised, these ARE NOT the same as racking. I would not be doing weekly inspections on office shelves. Certainly there are more important things to do. Just base it on risk assessment and don't overcomplicate it.
