Can anyone throw some light on my dilemma ? Do you have to be qualified to install or replace racking and if so what qualification ? How , or would ,I question the competence of a contractor that has been installing racking for my company for a number of years without any history of poor workmanship .

Hi Pyle.
I am curious as to why you need to question their competence if they have no history of poor workmanship?

Hi Pyle,
Surely if the contractor in question has been working for you for a number of years with no poor history then this in its self is an indication of experience or competence.
With regard to SEMA (Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association) they are a British trade association and as such provide information & Training etc. Although they are considered the leading body for racking etc there is no legal requirement for installers to hold a SEIRS card.
If I were in your position I would simply go through the contractor qualification assessment asking for details of Insurance, H&S Policy etc including references.
Hope this helps.

Hello Pyle,
Craig is correct in what he says. I would add that due to your obvious diligence in this regard I would suggest the introduction of yearly racking inspection. (conducted by an independent company other than your installers).
This will either confirm your confidence in your installers or highlight any shortcomings.
In my experience, half the defects I report as a racking inspector are due to defective installation. Although the industry has improved significantly over the last 25 years, is still remains hit and miss with regards to some installation companies.
Regards,
Gordon.

To mirror what others have said the fact that the history is good could prove competence, or very good fortune! Within my organisation we have historically had a number of practices accross the 9 DC's i look after, some including inexperienced warehouse staff assembling racking - I know!
The norm fos us now to get on the SEMA website get someone to install the racking, after the various checks - insurance etc. - then have another company from the SEMA site conduct the annual inspection for a cross check of work.
