Hello All I've recently been informed by our store man that he has been instructed to purchase hard hats with visors fitted, in line with the new regulations. I wasn't aware that the regulations had changed, i have looked at them and I still can't see a change - Could somebody please confirm if this is indeed a mandatory requirement. I suspect that it might be a client requirement given to him by one of our managers. Many Thanks

As you can still buy hard hats without visors then i would say that it is a manager that has decided he wants visors for the guys that work on his site. i would contact the manger and try to find out the reasoning behind this, you need to be careful that the workers aren't then removing the visors as this might mean the PPE is not fit for purpose unless it is an accessory that is designed to be removed. I have the opposite situation. We've been looking at PPE compatibility, and concluded that hard-hats with attached eye protection might simplify matters (particularly around the ears where conventional glasses, ear defenders and dust masks all interfere). However, at least one site manager has claimed that the eye protection that's built into / attached to hardhats is illegal (I suspect he just means insufficient to be legal).

Me being self employed I recently purchased such a hard hat with integral viser as I occasionally come accross a work operation I need to look closely at (machine cutting timber or concrete for example), and it is so easy to pull down the viser to protect my eyes. The viser is marked and provides impact protection enough for me. If the hat fits - wear it.

Risk assessment. Risk assessment, risk assessment :) What is the hazard? If it's dust etc then you might need a goggle, When you say visor are we talking those little drop down strips that cover your eyes or full face visor? Full visors can increase risk. Both the helmet and eye protection will need to be fit for purpose and comply with appropriate standards. For eye protection nowt wrong with either IMHO, combo or not, but whatever you go for must be a risk based decision and appropriate for use. To answer the question no new legislation, this is risk assessment based only.

as tey_boy says you have to be careful if you supply hard hats with visors these might not offer the correct protection for some tasks carried out on site but the wearers will use them as that is what they will see them being supplied for. i would only user hard hats with visors for specific tasks rather than it being seen as appropriate eye protection for all risks. possible someone has seen this as a good step forward having visors built in but possible not thought it through properly. i can see these being useful for visitors to a site who shouldn't be involved in any work practice requiring safety glasses but would offer general eye protection when walking around the site from any unforeseen sources.
