I'm in the proces of advising a customer on whether their 'saw room' enclosures and the equipment therein need to comply with DSEAR. I have copies of HSG103, L134, L135, L136, L137 but I notice that the HSE free download pdf for L138 is faulty. My understanding is that L138 is an overview of DSEAR. Does this mean that the other references I have contain everything that is in L138? JohnW

John, It appears your computer/internet conection may have a problem as I can download L138! The direct link is:- http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/l138.pdf

OK thanks. I suspect the computer (an old PC that customer lets me use) has an old version of Acrobat Reader. Just checked, yes version 5, and I'm not authorised to update any program. I'll try and download the file at home. Cheers

HSG 103 Safe handling of combustible dusts might also be useful.

Thanks, yes I started off with HSG103 (see list above) and now referring to all the ACoPs. And I'm at home now, and able to open L138. Adobe Reader v10 here. My customer will agree with me that their dust is combustible, it's GRP (glass-reinforced plastic). Shall I search for any reference that quotes an LEL for GRP dust or should I recommend the dust be tested and an LEL determined?

Minimum Ignition Temperature & Minimum Ignition Energy MIE will depend on the particle size and moisture content from the process in question. GRP dust MIE can range from < 10 mJ to 10000 mJ if containing a flame retardant. In the case of GRP dust from sawing/grinding MIE should be between > 30 <100 mJ. Ignition temp of 480 deg C. Minimum Explosive Concentration of 125 g/m3. Ultimately a dust hazardous area will exist if the concentration >75% of the MEC (125 g/m3) and the parameters outlined are required in order to determine the risk of explosion based on likely ignition sources. characteristic Particle size <500 μm [% by weight] 100 Particle size <250 μm [% by weight] 99 100 Particle size <125 μm [% by weight] 93 Particle size <63 μm [% by weight] 86 100 Particle size <32 μm [% by weight] 78 89 Particle size <20 μm [% by weight] 79 Median Value [μm] 14 <14 12 Moisture Content [% by weight] 0,5 0,5 0,5 Lower Ex-Limit [g/m3] 125 Max.Ex-Overpressure [bar] 7,0 KSt Value [bar m/s] 113 Explosibility St 1 Minimum Ignition Energy [mJ] >30/<100 Ignition Temperature BAM [°C] 480 Glowing Temperature [°C] 350

bleve, thanks for reply and information. The latter part of your message seems to be data from a table, size distribution? but I'm not sure what the % by weight numbers mean. Could you explain here, or PM me ? JohnW

In bleve's absence can anyone explain the tabulated figures quoted e.g. Particle size <250 μm [% by weight] 99 100 JohnW
