Dear All,
We're looking to replace / update our existing DSE application with an online training and assessment package.

As there are so many companies out there offering very similar products I am hoping to get some constructive feed back from the forum on the pros and cons of the various systems currently on the market. Are there any obvious (or not so obvious) pitfalls I should be looking out for? Have you had any problems with the different operating systems on the market for example when computers have been up graded? What about support from the companies when things stop working or don't do what you expect them to do?

Comments would be appreciated.

Hi,

It depends which service you are after from an online system.

Are you after a fully functioning automated system? As in the user carries out the assessment and training then the system prompts them as to suggestions and escalates the issues to the relevant department. very good for arms length management, but can feel that the user is speaking to a computer. the responses that are automated need to be created by you also, then the actual management of the system can be a nightmare when loads of people complete and have issues. cost is also a factor as you need to pay for them to host etc. example: Cardinus, Praxis 42.

i have used other good systems that require a bit more interaction from the H&S team, this does prompt emails that need to be dealt with but you can just give the email addresses of each department. i have used www.ergoergo.info in the past, this is a free website to use and hyperlink and if you ask them nicely they will let you use it more thatn this (cut and paste sections into your own courses etc). benefits are this is a lot cheaper, big downside is you now have to manage the assessments one by one.

so in my opinion the managed systems are good for large companies and the paper based assessment system is fine for a small-medium company. i have used the paper based system with 1000 employees and managed ok on my own with other duties.

We use WorkRite from Posturite.

Pro's: one off fee to purchase and can be used as many times as you like (no purchasing of credits); yearly fee for maintanance; good support & training; they can manage it for you; can be tailored to suit; program held on-line and therefore no need for IT to get involved; automated follow up pointing users in the right direction and trends can be identified.

Cons: Whinging members of staff who dont complete the assessment and email you wondering why they keep on receiving reminder emails. Time consuming to collate all names; email addresses; locations etc, particularly if your HR department dont know who there employing and you have to figure it out for them and needs to be maintained for when people move or leave.

All in all a pretty good system.

I have used the workrite system as well it works very well and is quite simple to use. It needs a complete list of current PC users so your IT section should be able to give you this. Workrite wil set the system up for you but you will need to chase your workforce to get it done. The system consists of a training package for each member of staff (done on thier PC) followed by a test to check they understand how the process works and why. The actual assessment is then done by the employee which highlights any issues. These are classified according to thier criticality and the system controller is notified what issues need to be addressed. The system works well (as do others I expect but have no experience of others so cant say with confidence). The system is reasonably priced, but there may well be other cheaper systems out there so take a look at some others.

Our group have invested in the Cardinus system, which has proved extremely successful. I have trield a number of similar packages, and found this to be the most able to apply to a variety of job roles (i.e. those that are based at a desk for a small amount of the day all the way to employees within call centres etc).

The good point is that it does not allow the users to "click through" the presentations quickly, and provides the full risk assessment afterwards.

There is also a good management tool, which allows you to prioritise users with the higher risks.

Maybe worth speaking to your EL insurers? I know as part of our renewed package we now have access to whole range of elearning packages, which is professional and impressive if im honest.
