Alan Best advice is keep it simple to start, there is good advice on the DEFRA website along with the advice and a sample plan on Page 25 http://www.defra.gov.uk/...on/pdf/swmp-guidance.pdf WRAP also do one but i dont think it is as clear on the advice Once you have done a few then it becomes easier to adjust more specifically to your needs Best of luck Keith

Can I just whisper the word competence here. A properly constructed SWMP whether draft or final needs a degree of knowledge and competence such that merely using the DEfRA or WRAPS templates is simply not enough. PCs etc should remember that they can land their client with problems as well as themselves. The commitment signed by client and PC has some serious implications if yopu read the text carefully. Bob

Alan are you the Client? If not you don't construct the SWMP the client does - maybe with some assistance from his Designer? It is the Client's responsibility to initiate the Plan then pass it to the PC to manage. On the other hand you may find that the waste management contractor will do most of the work for you?

Additionally, adding to the good info from BL & CB etc. you also need to have in place the managing side of things e.g. the Who does What When Where How etc. areas which are not indicated in/included in any of the templates etc [which are quite good] that I have seen Also time and again I have come across less than competent people especially some CDMC's that have convinced the clients that its also their role to get involved when they are not even mentioned in the law so have no place at all in SWMP! All the above said its not hard to get a plan made but to convince, in my opinion, the designers to design for the environment instead of an award is an up hill climb and to get reality on site management in place is also hard Best of luck

Bob Y Could not agree with your last comments more - I well remember estimating 2000 tonne of spoil off site in the draft and was sreamed at by the PC that they would not reach 100 tonne which they duly entered in the final plan. Guess what the transfer notes said at the end of the day:-) Yep 2025 tonne - I never let them forget!!! :-) It is this side of the planning that is really badly done and unfortunately the resources identified very widely are no real alternative to solid experience. Designers too have no real ability in moving things forward Bob
