Hi All I work for a company with a number of training rooms and have been tasked with calculating the capacity in terms of how many people can be in undergoing training in each room, I've searched the HSE website but all I can find is the guidance relating to min working space which is essentially 11m3, do these regs apply to training/conference rooms or am I barking up the wrong tree? Its quite a hot potato within in the company with a different people holding widely different views and I need to be as objective as I can. Any help or even a point in the right direction would be gratefully appreciated

There is a table in the building regulations approved document B plus other sources. but just to take examples from the table Standing spectator 0.3 m2/ per person amusement arcade assembly hall 0.5 committee room, conference room 1.0 office 6.0 shop sales area 2.0 so given the examples above i would look at treating it as a conference room. But you also need to consider number of exits from the room, as a guide one exit only no more then 60 people. But ultimately common sense should tell you when people are crammed in a room and it starts becoming uncomfortable. Phil

Thanks Phil That really helps, I know common sense dictates but because of the opposing points of view its in very short supply, I just want to try and cool the situation down a bit and this really helps

Phil- you also need to decide what kind of training you wish to deliver. Lecturing - cram is as many as you want. Q&A - cram them in. Technical instruction - smaller groups to allow questions and ensure you dont lose anyone. Instruction followed by practical hands on learning - small number - or larger number with a couple of break out rooms for the practical Also check what the FRA dictates David

Its going to be a mixture, but in the majority of cases its going to be a lecture format so I'd rather have a max capacity for that, we do have smaller break out rooms so if the training requires less density it will be that will be covered at the planning stage, just showing my ingorance whats "FRA" googled in and came up with Fell Running Association and Fighting Robots Association I assume its Fire Risk Assessment

agrees with David H, but building regs support FRA. Perhaps a Management procedure can give a cubic metre per person occupation personally my M.P where set at 2 cubic metres2 per person.
