It does raise an interesting issue, some one buys anothers rights for claiming, though in this case it is not due to finiancial motive

Looks like an extension of subrogation rights used by insurers in pursuing third parties although this has been via contractual terms agreed prior to the event. I too will be very interested to see whether the courts allow this to take place.
