Quick question.

Is there definitive information on the statutory requirement for signs for fire extinguishers. Is it statute that FE signs have instructions for use? I can see no requirement for this and strongly feel that FE training on practical use of FE should be the primary way of assuring competence in their use, not a step by step guide on a sign.

We currently use signs which comply with The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996. Guidance on Regulations, however have been advised by a 'consultant' that these are not legal and must include a step by step instruction on the sign as well as identification of type.

garfield the signs are provided under the Health and Saftey (Safety Signs and Signals) Regs. That specifies the minimum signs neede by law. There are no requirements to provide instructions on how they are to be used, this down to the training provided for the user. They are probably trying to justify some sort od sales pitch which of course means more money for them.

If fire extinguishers are mounted so as to be easily seen, there is no need to display additional signs on the walls behind them anyway.

Just another little money making venture from the fire equipment suppliers etc to supply the signs.

Thanks for replies...

I was pretty sure that the existing signage was fine but wanted to ask the question anyway. Its not a big deal and the cost was negligible. I think practical training is the key not a sign.
