Dear All,
I wonder if you can help me out with a couple of definitions please. I am a facilites manager with a small protfolio of buildings. The company want to formally make me the responsible person for 'fire' opf these buildings, which I do not have a probleme with as I am well versed and competent to deal with all issues. the problem I do have is that I am based in one location which takes up most of my time. If I were to be appointed as the resposible person, is it permissable to have a 'designated' person to manage the day to day issues on the sites? (such as unblocked fire exits, clear stairwells, fire alarm tests etc)

There's no legal requirement for one person to do everything! All that is needed is to make sure that everything needful is done by someone. The term "responsible person" really means the company/individual who is legally responsible for the premises, this is defined in the RRO as being the employer/landlord etc who is in fact just delegating the performance of the relevant duties to you and/or others.

Thanks Kate, to be honest it is along the lines of my understanding and you have confirmed it.

Kate, good answer.
I agree, just make sure that the people you appoint as responsible for the checks have enough training and time to understand and carry out their responsibilities, and don't forget the record keeping and, who checks the checkers?

Hi Crossman,
It is reasonably common and acceptable for fire safety tasks to be delegated to individuals on site, but your employer cannot absolve themselves of the responsibility.
Just remember that all those (including yourself) who are nominated to manage fire safety must be trained, competent and current.
