Hi all, A friend of a friend owns a small business (50-80 staff) and has asked me about seeking health, safety and enviromental accreditations as he would like to seperate himself from his competitors. He's very much into the displaying logos and memberships on his web site and is in the process of becoming a member of the British Safety Council, where I believe he gets to use their logo's etc. Is there any organisations out there that offer a similar service i.e, assess you and give you an environmental accrediation, allowing you to display logos? Going down 18001 & 14001 route is not an option due to cost so alternatives are to be the main consideration. Thank you in advance.

Hi Guru, That would depend on your friends, friends nature of business, for example they could use CHAS if appropriate.

Its a manufacturing company....he's keen to get some sort of enviro accreditation. The obvious one is 14001 but its too expensive.

I'd suggest BS8555, it's a staged approach to the implementation of an EMS such as 14001 or EMAS. It would take a bit longer but would save money getting in specialist consultants.

You may find this useful http://www.wales.groundw...o/green-dragon-ems.aspx. Green Dragon is a stepped Standard recognising effective environmental management. The Standard offers an environmental management system relevant to the specific needs of companies and organisations and rewards actions taken to achieve environmental improvements................

If your friend is into collecting logos then perhaps try RoSPA. Corporate members are allowed to display the logo on their web site and stationary. IIRSM have just developed a corporate membership that includes use of a logo on websites and stationary. Not sure what the requirements are for corporate RoSPA and IIRSM membership though. Also look at CHAS - you get a logo with that. I'd suggest that RoSPA, IIRSM and CHAS will be cheaper and easier to gain than OHSAS 18001. For the environment side of things, EMAS may be cheaper than ISO 14001.

Guys guys guys. Why all the talk about the direct costs of 14001 / 9001 / 18001 etc. If done properly the initial costs and ongoing certification to said standards can be recovered fairly quickly. In the first 2 years of implementing our EMS which is certified to 14001 we recovered all costs and saved much more in successfully implementing energy saving strategies. This trend is continuing... Also, different accreditation bodies differ in terms of pricing and risk levels evaluations can impact on cost. Its not about hanging a badge above the door. Think long-term gain not short term. GC
