Hi, My boss and I wish to introduce some KPI's (Key Performance Indicators) as we have several branches and we plan on running a league table as they are very competitive so we thought we would use that to our advantage!! We are obviously going to do several based around LTI's (Lost Time Injuries) and accident rates etc.. but wondered if any of you guys find any other KPI's really useful with regards to measuring Health and Safety performance??? Any suggestions greatly received.. Cres

Cres You might find the following worth considering which I used as part of an annual H&S award system for a national company with 300 plus sites: 1. Number of branch H&S Team Meetings held, which should be minimum of four per year. 2. Completion of risk assessments and action plans implemented - biased towards 100% completion (which is a legal requirement); 3. Number of branch employees trained in H&S (correctly recorded on company training forms) expressed as a percentage of staff trained divided by number of branch staff; 4. Number of RIDDOR reportable accidents/incidents and quality of action taken to prevent recurrence - expressed as a ratio of number of branch staff divided by number of accidents and/or near misses. 5. Brief written recommendation by Regional Director as to why he thinks that his submission should be a contender. Regards PM

Scheduled inspections / audits completed Actions completed out of those due for completion I find this helps with getting the things done!

Hi Cres, Some other measures we use are no of hazards/near misses reported, against the number of hazards actioned and closed. (we use a hazard near miss report book to capture this) Number of safety tours or inspections carried out. As PM suggests training should figure, we run this as number of health & safety training hours completed. Hope this helps!

We have found introducing a rota for safety walkrounds and using the data from these to highlight possible trends. Or maybe 'Perfect days', a perfect day is classified has having no incidents or negative reports from the walkround. Try and set realistic targets, involve your staff, get their buy in. introduce a simple form that staff can fill in if they see a problem and they can do something about it. we call these Be Safe's but you can customise this to what you and your staff want.
