Does anyone know why Biohazards have not been included in GHS? It seems a bit daft to me that all the CoSHH symbols will be changing but that biohazard remains as it was? I found a little on a Canadian website but no good explanation. Cheers Jon

Biohazards are not included in GHS mainly because they are not included in the system that it is replacing: CHIP. Biohazards were not included in CHIP as they are by nature a different sort of hazard to chemical system and the system is not appropriate for this. For example there is no such thing as a bioagents MSDS.

It would be foolhardy in the extreme to change an internationally recognised hazard symbol just because you want to change things. The idea is to make things safer, not cause confusion!

GHS is to do with chemicals classification, labelling and communication of information to chemical users. That is why it does not include Bio-hazard or for that matter radiation hazard signage!

Thanks to all, you're right and it's me that's been daft. It was a bad day and I was confusing the labelling and signage issues. We already use the biohazard transportation label (white diamond) and was wondering why this wasn't changing to the same but with red border as per GHS. Thinking on it we don't get the biohaz symbol on the orange background - doh! (Sorry Ian - I wasn't implying the symbol should change, it was to do with the label design). We also obviously use the yellow warning triangle signage (safety signs regs) which again is not the same as GHS. Back on track now so thanks again. Regards Jon
