Can anyone help please? What limits apply to the carriage of diesel fuel by road? It is proposed, as part of a contingency plan to have the ability to transfer diesel fuel from one location to another. The appropriate containers and amount limits would therefore be very helpful as we do not want to solve one problem by creating another. Many thanks.

The total amount that can be carried is 1000 litres. The size of the containers is up to you.

Under this amount you will not require an ADR trained driver, however, you will need to give training to all who will be involved in the transport operation. One consideration will be spillage response, if you have a 1000 litre IBC and it gets punctured, what do you do? Would it be better to have smaller containers?

Also, you will require a fire extinguisher in the vehicle, a 2kg carbon dioxide will suffice.

Double check the quantity it was 999Ltrs a few years back or you had to use full Hazmat rules.

One of our vehicles was stopped and we had to get a certificate from the tank providor to say the tank was only capable of holding 999 ltrs.Once we had this Vosa and the Police were happy.

We did have 1000 ltrs marked on the tank so we did look to be in the wrong.

Things may have changed but I am not sure.

1.1.3.6.3 of ADR.

The limit for fuel is 1000 litres.

Motorhead - many thanks for your responses. I take it that it is ok to use what I know as 5gall jerrycans as long as these meet the requirements.

On occasion, we sometimes use a company estate car/utility vehicle to carry diesel to sites. Do we need to display signage to the effect that we are carrying 20 litres?

There is no legal requirement to display signage for this quantity of fuel.
