Hi All I have identified some employees that need to have health surveillance (lung function and hearing). My query is that I have searched for Occ Health providers and one has stated that they can come to site and carry out both tests - all they need is a quiet space / room. My only experience with hearing tests is where they have been carried out in a booth. Does anyone know if it is possible carry out this test correctly outside of a sealed booth? Also apart from identifying that the nurses are registered is there any other way of confirming that a service provider is competent? This company is a member of COHPA - Commerical Occupational Health Providers Association. I have not heard of this group? Can anyone validate this association or recommend any other bodies that a competent Occ Health Provider may belong to? Thanks in Advance Rich

Rich As long as the quiet room satisfies the requirements of the BS (the number of which escapes me for the moment), then that would be OK. LB

HSE now recommend that OH providers are accredited to the FOM quality standard. Many havn't heard of it but you can find details via a search on HSE webpage or FOM webpage. They also recommend that clients need to be 'competent consumers', i.e. to be able to discern good from poor quality provision. If you can't find information anywhere else there are a couple of presentations on HSE Scotland webpage from a meeting in Inverness in March, one by an HSE OH Nurse, one by myself.

richv I notice you are in Essex, so you could try http://www.gipping.co.uk/ (based in Suffolk) who have a mobile consulting room which includes a sound proof booth

Rich There are several accreditation's for OHP either of the two mentioned here are fine, I think the sound level in the room for hearing tests without a booth should be around 25db. I would always ask for a reference for a previous or current client/customer and the qualifications of the Nurse. Make sure the nurse that visits the site also has the qualifications and not just the nurse or adviser on the phone. You can also check out www.resano.co.uk based in Scotland. Maybe a bit far from you but they are very experienced and very helpful.
