We have a fire curtain system with built in smoke extraction on activation of the fire alarm. The system is installed in a public access facility and is now beginning to develop issues in regard to maintenance. Cost and obsolete parts are causing problems. Does anyone know if there is a legal requirement to have this type of system in public access buildings such as shopping malls or transport facilities. I realise it will be the findings of the FRA that should determine this. There is not any significant fire loading and the general consensus is that the system is an over engineered control measure which could be removed...
Any thoughts?

A fire curtain is designed to prevent the spread of fire - heat and smoke.
I wonder in whose opinion it has been over engineered? Is this the holder of the purse perhaps?
You are correct in saying the FRA will determine if it is needed, has there been a material change in the premises that would take away the need for the curtain perhaps?
Public access facility - I would think twice before taking it out - you may find that if repairs/spares are expensive or difficult to obtain it may be cost effective to have a new, more modern design type installed?
Have a look at the fra and ask the fire risk assessors their opinion and will they put their name against any decision to remove it.

Chris is correct in suggesting the use for this curtain, however,it may be prudent to check with local building control.
Has the building undergone a change of use?
If installed originally there maybe a reason for the installation given at BC.
