Appologies in advanced if this has been asked before. I have a question that others may be able to shed some light on. If you have a well known high street retailer that have staff rooms with no cookers (fat fryers, chip pans ect) and have a simple toaster, kettle and microwave for staff to use, is there any reason as to why they keep their Fire Blankets? In my mind if the electrical items catch fire, the last thing I want to do is use a fire blanket on it due to the electrical risk, but would be happy using a co2 extinguisher on it (which they also have in the staff rooms). If anyone could give me so insight or point me in the direction of an answer that would be fantastic. Many thanks Richard

A CO2 extinguisher will deprive the fire of oxygen for about 20-30 seconds but then the re-ignition source (electricity) remains unless the power to the kettle, microwave or toaster is switched off. At least with a blanket the fire remains smothered indefinitely. Plus it can be wrapped around a burning person. In short they cost next to nothing to maintain once in place so if there is a potential use why remove it?

Good points made by m, also a fire blanket can be used for wrapping around a fire damaged object to carry out of the building.

Richard, Sounds like we have similar sites (but mine aren't high street). I'd say about 5 to 10% of my sites have elected off of their own back to provide fire blankets, it's not one of my stipulations.

It was decided (not by me) to install a fire blanket in the office welfare area. I didn't feel it necessary to remove and have left them in position with a co2 extinguisher available too.
