I've been asked a question, which I don't know the answer to....But would love to.....Can you help please?

Is there any relevance/rational behind the use of Yellow or Orange high vis vests? Or is their use simply down to fashion preference?

Hi Steven,

It is very much down to the organisation, for example Network Rail won't accept any other colour than Orange lineside. Apparently one benefit of orange over yellow is that orange doesn't attract insects.

There have been lots of threads on this before - shame the forum search doesn't work.

Eh Kate, the search facility DOES work. Search posts for 'orange vis' and there are pages of threads/posts, 23 April 2011, 01 December 2010, 29 July 2010, 23 June 2010, 22 July 2009 etc

The search certainly doesn't work on my system! It just locks up into a world of its own and never produces any results.

For fire wardens we opted for orange because this would differentiate the FW from any construction workers on site. Also we have green first aiders and blue site controllers.

Well, as I say, it does work. You can search for word or phrase, you can search for a member's postings. I have old WinXP and IE 8 so it works with them.

It's misleading to say it works if it only works on some systems. I have XP and IE7, and whether it's because of that or something else on my system, it definitely does not work for me.

Be patient - it can take longer than the time to boil the kettle for a cup of tea. You may also get error messages, but if you ignore them you may find that it has successfully searched for what you wanted.

You do need to use 5 characters or more in your search string however, which is a bit of a problem!

Orange is used on the railways due to the fact 1) yellow is a caution signal colour and 2) orange stands out better therefore give better advance warning to the person who may hit the wearer (local weather & other conditions permitting).

Mmmm,

It has never worked for me, I could search and go on holiday for a week and it would still be frozen....

Badger, the transport police have special dispensation to wear yellow hi-viz on the tracks.

So it's your system that doesn't 'work'. Your statement could discourage others from using the search facility.

Anyway, my main customer issues yellow hi-vis to eveyone to use in areas where it is mandatory.

Additionally orange jackets with badges and text on the back are issued to Emergency Response teams - fire wardens, first aiders, plant shutdown team, and they wear the orange jackets all the time so that they are readily identfied as folks with authority to take actions and help, and be identified by any attending fire services.

Rail companys use Orange as green could be confused with the all clear signal (green), Orange (red) is caution.

Hmmm I am puzzled, how can a 'black' hi-viz jacket be considered to be hi-viz?

On our construction civil engineering sites general operatives wear yellow high visibility jackets / vests. Banksmen and slingers & signallers wear orange high visibility jacket / vests.
