We all have (hopefully) membership of professional bodies, however, who will fight our cause if our employer becomes unreasonable, or we have a problem that is not health & safety related.
Therefore, should there be a union, is there a union that I am unaware of ? Comments appreciated.

I joined the EETPU when i was an apprentice which then became the AEEU and now AMICUS. I have just changed my role description to HSE Manager and maintained my AMICUS membership. I have used it on a couple of occasions for legal assistance and they have been great.
Contact them and see what they say.

AMICUS is now UNITE, and has been for some time now !
Quote:Unite is the union for the 21st century. Unite was formed by a merger between two of Britain's' leading unions, the T&G and Amicus

I have been a member of a union for a very long time now, i am currently in a health and Safety role within the steel industry. I recommend anyone to join the Community union formally the old ISTC union it is a very forward thinking, progressive union that treats its members with great respect and fights for their members tooth and nail. You can access legal services etc and is at the forefront in issues including Health and Safety

StuffFor Blokes
That'll be Amicus
I am in Prospect. I have just come off the phone with our union rep (shop steward) about who at what level management should be doing the risk assessments. I keep in touch on a regular basis. The union deals with everyone at my employer.
Andyg Are you suggesting that H&S advisers need to be in a separate union from everybody else. I thought the current trend is for each workplace to have one union? It might be a bit difficult if you are the sole member of a union that is not recognised by the employer.

Do unions still exist?
Haven't we moved into a era where we treat people correctly?

Hi Andy,
I would recommend joining PROSPECT. This is a union for professionals and I have found them extremely helpful in the industry I work in, (nuclear). They do not contribute to any political party either. Let me know if you want any further details.

A Kurdziel
It was one of my thoughts, as we have separate membership of our professional bodies that the remainder of the management & workforce that we oversee.
Thanks for all of the responses, it has certainly given me some food for thought.

Perhaps the subscription to IOSH (expensive) ought to include free legal advice and help - with 38000 members IOSH must have some clout - or am I in cloud cuckoo land?
Never been in a union and don't plan to start.
