We ask our company vehicle drivers to carry out basic pre-start vehicle inspections and I'm writing to ask if anyone knows of an ACOP or best practice standard out there. If not could I ask: Do you ask your company vehicle drivers to carry out vehicle inspection checks? What frequency are these inspections carried out? What checks do they make? Thank you in anticipation Mark

Hi Steve, thanks for that. I was aware of the HSE guidance but wanted examples of what others do. To that end I have re-written the question. Does any one have practical examples of the frequency and types of vehicle checks we should ask drivers of our company vehicles to carry out that they are prepared to share with us. Mark

Hi Mark; yes we carry out daily pre use checks on our forklift trucks and the hgv drivers have to fill in a daily defect report, before venturing out onto the highway. We record any faults etc the person carrying out the checks initials to say that they have been done- we then retain the sheets (for flts anyway) for 3 yrs.

Hi Mark, I've sent you a PM with details of our pre-use checklist system we use for fleet vehicles. Hope it's of interest.

Pre-use checks are only as good as the person completing them: A - Are they sufficiently knowledgable to complete the check? B - Have they bought into the process and actually carry out the check as opposed to just completing the form? What monitoring processes exist? If none, then what's the point?

I cant speak for others Max but our operators go through this checking process as an integral part of their training; they get the chance to practice this during the practical and the written parts of the competency check at the end of the course. Also they are the ones on the truck most of the time so they get to know their vehicle (familiarisation breeds contempt??) and what to look for ie changes in condition. Have a good weekend one and all - don't forget the factor 50!!
