Hi All
I work for a social care charity and our employees need to push clients in wheelchairs frequently. Interested to know the approach of other organisations when faced with new or expectant mums who work with wheelchair users. Do you stop them from pushing wheelchairs for the duration of the pregnancy or not?

Depends on the risk assessment for pregnant lady?
Do the ra with the ladies in question and seek medical advice.
Pregnancy is one of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act so you have to make reasonable adjustments when necessary.

Manual handling regs risk assessment I reckon. Possibly every two weeks review the situation as the pregnancy develops, use the heirarchy of control on it. I suppose it depends who is in the wheel chair too, if its a 50kg old woman then maybe itd be fine, if its a bigger person then maybe not so fine to do. Possibly though its easier to just eliminate the pushing altogether if it was possible to do.

You also need to take into account where the wheel chair has to be pushed. If it is just inside a hospital on a good flat surface then that would present much less risk than pushing across a field (extreme example but you know what I mean).
