Having read various guidance on offering work experience - is HSG165 now obsolete? -can't find it in HSE publications and I'm trying to get clear in my head clarification on what further controls I need to put in place as to exactly what our placement can or cannot do - by risk assessment of course - 15 years old and working with our maintenance team. He will be mentored and supervised throughout, no work at height or operating hazardous machinery, certain power tools etc for example but I would also like to make sure his time with us is both interesting, rewarding and of course safe. He is already attending a land ops 1 day course at college so already being trained in the likes of hedgecutting, some building work, animal care etc. Does anyone have a copy of HSG165?

Whilst we must look after people we must also treat them properly and using hazardous kit/operating in a hazardous work environment should be encouraged in the right way noting that the most hazardous thing a young person does is crossing the road to go to work in the first place - just look at the road casualty figures!; so whilst using guidance etc we should also use the risk assessment process and encourage proper risk taking

On holiday recently I watched a 9 year old operate a large motor driven boat [inclusive of the chains on the motor driven anchor etc] - No problems in my eyes as the captain was keeping an eye on him however some negative comments came from other tourists re 'in our country this would not happen cause the H&S mob would be after the employer!' Utter rubbish but that is where we are

Thanks everyone for replies and guidance documents. Bob I totally agree and the risk assessment process is the way to go. However HSG guidance can and has assisted me - it is also apparent that supervision and mentoring is the key to making work experience of value.
