Hi all
what are your thoughts on a really effective SMS
do you prefer the HSG65 model? or the ISO18001?

18001 has a lot in common with 9001 and 14001 so look to the bigger picture. If you have either 9001 or 14001 then you are well on the way to 18001 requirement; audits, control of documents, etc. You just need to make sure those documents can be expanded to fit 18001 which should not be a problem

Essentially there is not much difference between HSG 65 and 18001 in the sense that both rely on the ‘plan-do-check’ methodology that is standard in quality control methodology. There is a cosmetic difference in the terms used but the main difference is that 18001 incorporates a requirement for continuous improvement and 18001 is designed to be auditable so you get a piece of paper( at a price) saying you are doing it properly. By contrast anybody can claim to be following HSG 65, but it is free.
