I have tried everything to gain employmnet in the Health & Safety industry, i have worked for charity organizations recently completed a one month work placement shadowing a health and safety adviser but still cant gain employment. I hold Nebosh general and fire certificates,a CIEH advanced hygiene at level 4 and various other certificates. I have recently enrolled on the Nottingham and Trent Diploma which i have paid for myself and the question is, am i making the right move to gain employment or is this expenditure a bad move? Will employers see this as a constructive use of time and money? all reponses treated with the greatest respect

Latchy, anything that increases your knowledge base and increases your potential employability in my mind is money well spent; as the qualifications will go with you for life. However if you search these forums you will find lots and lots of people saying how difficult it is to get their first step onto the H&S ladder at present. I feel that this is due to there being lots of experienced and knowledgeable (no disrespect meant to you) safety 'people' out there looking for work at the moment. I think that there is also a general feeling of there being fewer jobs available, and as such lots of highly qualified and experienced applicants are fighting for the few real jobs that do surface. Ultimately the Dip will allow you to apply (i assume it is IOSH accredited) for Grad status which is the first step to becoming a chartered member, which if you wish to continue in H&S, is seen by many at present the minimum standard that they are looking for (rightly or wrongly) in a new employee. Sorry I cant be more positive. Stuart

Latchy, as Stuie has said the job market out there is very difficult for everybody at the moment. I managed to get my first full time health and safety role last year on the back of the NEBOSH general certificate and a few years in the utilities sector. I believe I was extremely lucky to be in a position where I met their main requirements, funnily enough one of them was to be able to converse and produce reports in Welsh as well as English. I would recommend you keep going with your diploma (check that it meets the Grad.IOSH eligibility criteria). Have a look around your area to see what jobs are around and see if you can tweek your CV to match, I'm not advocating lying just concentrating more specifically on the areas that they are interested in. Even look at facilities management jobs since there is a lot of cross over with health and safety especially on the fire side. Best of Luck D.

Hi Lachy and Co I'm in the same boat I guess. NEBOSH Gen Cert (Tech IOSH) and with luck the Construction as well as soon as the results get back. I also have D32/33 and a qualified electrician to boot. With me I think my age (58) is not helping here either. I love Wales, but work for everyone here is tight at the moment. Good luck anyway Bob

Hi Latchy & Zimmy As explained in a previous discussion here with an individual looking for work, your CV has to be clear and showing relevant experience compared to the job request as Draiggoch mentions. Upload your CV to some of the online job ads like Guardian Newspaper and CV Library. If you do a little online research you can upload your CV to many of the agencies that advertise through SHP and HSP magazines. Google search health and safety jobs and many agencies will come up, send your CV to them, they have a vested interest in getting you work. I have used them myself before gaining work as a trainee (I'm 45 and female). Don't give up. Some companies, like the one I work for value experience. All the Best
