To be honest, when I looked at it (several years ago), it seemed to me the easiest thing to do was find a 3-day approved course and attend it, so I did that. I spent much of the time silently disagreeing with the tutor, but it qualified as academic qualification on the topic and got the points needed. I still think the prior 20 years of experience in the construction industry was both more relevant and should have been adequate without the course, but it didn't seem to be according to the points system.

Hi David, APS publish a guidance document for their points system. Here is a link https://www.aps.org.uk/entrance_criteria_1.pdf Pat

Hi David, You will probably find this APS link easier to assess your points. https://www.aps.org.uk/1...it_tables_15.12.10_1.pdf I would suggest you sit down quietly and highlight all of your qualifications and experience on the above table. When you have finished give APS a call and they will help you to allocate them in the correct areas. I came half a point short in one area. They adjusted my education and experience accordingly to easily achieve the points in the required locations. APS were very approachable. Brett

I get angry with IOSH and the poor leadership in the IOSH Construction Group due to the fact that Chartered Safety & Health Practitioners who want to undertake CDM-C roles are forced to joined another body! Why has the leadership of the IOSH Construction Group not ensured that a CDM-C Register of IOSH Members is established? It must be asked what the leadership of IOSH Construction has done since 2007? The register that should have been created and HSE Approved in 2007 is no further advanced in 2011. The OSHCR has shown that this is not rocket science and can be achieved at low cost. Why can a OSHCR Consultant not by default save lives in construction therefore not even a need to create a new register?

I phoned them last year and the girl that I spoke with could not have been more unhelpful and rude if she tried. I asked a couple of straight forward questions regarding the allocation of credits and she said in a round about way that I was too stupid to apply and hung up on me. One of the questions I asked was if my time on the tools counted towards experience or is the experience purely as a safety guy, simple enough I thought. Still never got an answer to it.

Hi TFCSM, I have only stated my experience with APS. Experience on the tools only counts if it's carpentry. Bricklaying does not. On the serious note again, hopefully your case was a one off. I had a similar case of poor manners on Friday. Brett

I agree with brett_wildin in that When I applied I contacted the APS and found the person at APS most helpful in advising me on how to allocate the points and found that I had more than enough in each section. One thing to think about though is if you are sucessful in your application the APS CPD is quite ridgid in how you satisfy the criteria to maintain your professional status whereby you have to accumulate points in various sections, you can view a sample of this on their website

Hi David1967, I went through the point scoring process last year, took me a while to get my head round it, but didn't get round to sending the application form back because CMIOSH was more important for me to achieve at that time. I must say that APS were helpful over the phone but I didn't feel as though the administrators really understood the qualification process and what they really equate to. I'm now CMIOSH and am looking to apply to APS now to get the competency I perceive to be required for CDM-C status at this time. As you probably know APS now is a re-morph of the Association of Planning Supervisors, so guess they still hold the cards as far as proving competency for CDM-C in a clear definable way is concerned. I wouldn't recommend applying for the Construction Safety Practitioner though as this in my mind is equivalent to CMIOSH. I'm sure the IOSH Construction Group should hold some of the cards though!
