All

I have recently completed my NVQ4 in occupational Health and Safety as well as a level 3 apprentaship in management. A colleague has enrolled on the NVQ 5 with combined Post Graduate qualification which i would imagine is my next step forward. I completed the NVQ4 in 6 months and had previously agreed study time for 2 years so should have some time on my side.

Has anyone completed the course and if so did you find it beneficial? Also what was involved in releation to study time ?

Thanks for any help

Tom

not seen this one before is it a new option?

Also what level is the postgraduate as that could have a big influence, ie. A PgC takes less than a Post Grad Diploma, takes less than an MSc - and they all take a lot of work. A little meat on the bone may help people give you some advice.

Hi Tom

I have completed the NVQ Level 5 in Occupational Safety – not to be confused with the new NVQ Level 5 Diploma which supersedes the NVQ Level 4.

There is still some confusion out there about this award as to whether it still exists – some providers have dropped it and some still run it – I have seen it advertised in the SHP.

My understanding is the take up was never much.

The level 5 is a Post Grad award sitting at level 7 on the qualification framework – I have a IIRSM publication (I’ll send you a copy on request) which places it at a level 8 – I have done it and it aint a doctorate but if they want to place it at Level 8 I wont argue.

It’s a strategic qualification – if you don’t hold a strategic position then you will struggle to submit the required evidence – there is a lot of financial criteria to meet.

PM me and let me have your mobile more that happy to go over it with you.

Thanks DP,

I currently manage H&S across multiple projects, I have therefore arranged a meeting with my manager to discuss the types of activiteies (strategic) i would need to get involved in and how we could achieve this.

You are correct, i discussed the new NVQ and from what i could obtain there was very little difference from the old 4 all be it credits are now awarded.

Thanks again for your help

Tom

you have me intrigued how does the "combined Post Graduate qualification" work or is it two separate things?

It was a course sent to me by a colleague. The provider was BCS colleague and certain units were exempt if the NVQ4 had been completed within an acceptable timescale (not sure of this but would guess 2 years).
As far as im aware it all falls as one qualification but haven't really researched the course just the criteria for completeing units. DP has explained the level of recognition the course provides however they are not readily available in my experience.

Sorry i can't tell you more

Tom
