Hi all

i have been invited to go self employed for a contract of around 5 weeks.

is it best to go via an umbrella company through an agency or self employed

Other than get insurance Dave I can't help you mate. An agency will charge a premium I think.

I'm sure others here can offer more help than that.

I recommend the HMRC website FIRST....

It could well be that your contract does not fall into a category qualifying as self-employed.

if this is a one off and you are not planning to be regularly self employed then use an umberella company rather than the irritation with the HMRC.

At a rate of £200 per day you can expect to pay the unberella company about £5 per day/ They will deduct your tax and NI, get you a tax allowance on your travel expences and provide an invoice for your records.

Also as others have said, consider your PI arrangements.
