Does anyone know of a product that goes over the end of an entrance barrier pole to make the end stand out more and possibly protect anybody daft enough to walk under the barrier as it was being lowered?

Ask your MD if you can borrow the big red nose she/he still has fixed to the front of his/her BMW. Merv

You never saw many MOD policemen hanging from the the end of a barrier pole. (unless they got it reallyreally wrong) (or were reallyreally obnoxious) Merv

Black and Yellow Hazard Tape? Or if you look for coloured Foam Rubber in any Internet search engine you may find something that you can use. Not sure how effective it would be - don't know what the hazard/risk is you identified - is it the weight of the arm (nothing may help in that case) or a sharp edge where the above may help. Please not I am not suggesting that I actually think either are necessary as I do not know the situation. I will trust you have done your own assessment and think actions are needed. Brian

Tennis ball or similar (or Homer Simpson doll (Doh!)) in a piece of string? This would also provide hours of free entertainment for the security team should there happen to be any stray dogs in the area...........

Ron's idea helps; as I have seen such set ups [usually a few in a row and because they move they catch the eye ] but they will only work if the person has some sort of common sense in the first place and the barier is moving / or there is wind and catching a person and disciplining them also seems to work

What's poor old Homer done to deserve to be hanged... Surely there are far more deserving effergies that could do the job; most residing in Westminster.

Cheers Bob, it was a serious suggestion. I'm not so sure that the original poster saw it that way though. Sometimes humour works to reinforce a safety message.

Sheesh Bob! Who do you work for? Disciplining somebody for having wind seems a bit harsh...........

There could be a few forum posters to hang from this barrier pole soon. That is if they continue to insist on trying a Friday approach on a Thursday :-) Can we please respect the OP from here on and focus on offering help if we can, Thank You. Moderator 5

Dear Mod, My proposal for a red nose was quite serious though I do accept that it could have been construed as being in the Friday vein. Sorry. The "MOD" reply was, I do admit, a bit "Friday" Sorry. Got carried away. A demain. Merv

Fair cop (no pun intended!) and sorry. I don't know of anything specific but there may be something on the market, although it strikes me (again no pun intended) that this would only serve to protect the person from being hit by the end of the pole (the 'fastest' bit) but not the rest of it. How about a ball from a ballcock/cistern thingy? There was a case a few years ago at a DIY store in Norwich where a horizontal swinging 'a frame' type barrier hadn't been fully secured in the open position. Tragically it swung open as a car approached the exit and the end of the barrier/pole went through the screen and fatality injured a young lad in the passenger seat. I also believe that there were other similar recorded cases elsewhere.

Well I'm thinking of a dangly metal frame thingy that I've seen, hangs the whole length of the barrier, and makes a jangly noise as the barrier goes up and down, and would certainly catch the attention of a pedestrian before it hit him.

There is some HSE information on the sort of case I mentioned at #15. http://www.hse.gov.uk/wo...cetransport/barriers.htm Sorry, can't really think of anything else on the original question but I have seen the thingys that John mentions

Thanks for the answers. Unfortunately it’s an up and down barrier and we have no MoD plods (wrong Department). A college has agreed to look at this while I‘m in Spain. Cheers

I think we're missing the point here, chaps. I assume the barrier is to control vehicle access. Which begs the question: Why are pedestrians ducking under it at all?!! Better to put measures in place to divert people away from the barrier in the first place than protecting/warning them before they get clunked. Ian A-H
