Hi all,
I was wondering if other companies carry out periodic medical checks on employees entering confined spaces. If so, to what level etc.? Thanks Jon

We have a medical/health surveillance programme in place that is task based.... this has been drawn together by our occupational health specialist and means that each FLT driver has relevant things checked (eyesight, blood pressure etc). It also means that anyone supervising confined spaces entry will be picked up for things such as lung function, blood pressure etc and the frequency of this is annual.
Suggest that you speak with your OH provider as they should be able to give suitable advice.

Jon, in the Water industry it is common to carry out such medicals every three years. The Occ' Health team usually carry out lung function tests (after step-stool exercises), ECG, blood pressure, and body mass index.
Some water companies also carry out yearly medical for staff over 55 who may be required to wear breathing apparatus.

Jon, are you asking from a point of view of suitability for the person to enter confined spaces or health surveillance due to the contents of the space or both?
The CS ACoP/guidance gives some basic information on the first, and I suggest that you would need to consider a number of factors that would best be considered. An OH service would advise further.
If the latter then I suppose the need or otherwise for health surveillance would be driven by whether there is an identifiable condition(s) that may be a risk factor and whether there is a valid surveillance technique available. Again I would say that an OH service could provide some help or advice
