Hi. I'm trying to think of a mnemonic for my employer's overall health & safety system. Does anyone have any examples of these where they have been used successfully that I could use as examples to demonstrate to Senior Management to get buy-in? Don't worry - I don't intend to copy as I want our own company one. Thanks

Don't know, never used or heard of one for a h&s management system. If you really need that to get your senior management buy in - good luck!

HANDS (health and safety) short and to the point. Each department had a HANDS advisor.

Hiya, You can't go far wrong by quoting the success of "STOP" by DuPont! Check out the following article, it gives some excellent background into safety branding. One of the good points is that you need to make sure your safety brand, mnemonic, acronym or what ever you use reflects your industry. It also needs to reflect the main hazards you want to avoid! http://thinkactbsafe.com/Branding_Safety.htmlRemember though it doesn't need to be an acronym. Although there are some good ones like "WISH" (Worker involvement in Safety & Health) and "SAFE" (Site Assessment for Everyone) you need to make sure you don't get bogged down trying to make your message 'fit' an acronym. Sometimes a simple phrase like "Involve" or "Work Safe" will be far more effective. There will be some people who don't like this type of thing and if done badly I agree it can have an adverse effect. I'm a believer however that if done correctly, having a standard 'brand' to your documents, posters, policies, etc. can only help and portray a professional, powerful message that comes from the company and not just...you. After all it works for other departments, so why not H&S? Ian

Hi folks - thanks for all your replies. Most useful. For a company involved with the water industry how about?

I would suggest if you intend to do this, you don't pick something easy to change to mean something opposite to the message to are trying to convey.
ie PIPE = People In Peril Everywhere.
If you get what I mean, take a few minutes to see if you can change whatever you come up with, just to see what others could.
Hope it works though
Chris

Danger? SOD it.
See it (keep your eyes and ears open / stay alert) Own it (Take responsibility - don't assume someone else will) Deal with it. (Do something , report it, ....)
And, for observation reports - the sin bin (Safety Improvements Needed Before INjury
