The riots across England last week have prompted the prime minister to put the ‘broken society’ back at the top of his agenda – with health and safety highlighted as one of the key reasons why rioters and looters felt able to act “without common sense”.

Referring to the “sickening acts”, “twisted moral code”, and “irresponsibility and selfishness” displayed on the streets last week Mr Cameron announced that the Government is to review its work in root-cause areas such as schools, welfare, families – and health and safety.....

H&S a root cause area........................

I regret that you have, as newspapers tend to do, taken one part of the article and used this as a headline to promote a particular view. The article as a whole does not fully support your thread title.

Another section of the same article shows "Mr Cameron is not blaming health and safety for the riots “per se” but that it is one of a raft of issues emerging in society at the moment that are contributing to a lack of people taking responsibility for their actions"

Just home after a few days break and only just swa this posting. The things we saw were without doubt serious and very worrying especially some who where involved were from quite well off backgrounds. I have a problem though as to how the Prime Minister can claim that the H&S culture is one of the causes. Most (if not all) the rioters have no real concept about H&S especially when they acted after they threw away thier brains and simply ran amoke. Hoping to pass the blame on the killing of someone who apparantly (according to press reports, don't know how true that is) was a know problem. But I will sit in a dark corner and think what the link to H&S is.

Well, there's definitely a market for manual handling training, judging by the size of some of those plasma screens coming out of the shops!

I thought it was sad that the many of the youth of today ( God, I sound old!! ) were too stupid to even bother covering their faces up during the riots. A rather good indicator of the low level of intelligence involved.

Well, when the 'full force of the law' in most cases will probably consist of community service orders, why bother?

They should be flogged or forced to clean dirty lavatories with their tongues. Or both. At the same time.

I have a couple here they could get started on straight away.

Seems the opposite - people being imprisoned for setting up facebook groups or accepting a stolen garment. However, what can we believe when we hear the news through the filter of the sensationalist tabloids and BBC News 24 -often hungry for stories before the facts are fully available.

Coming back to the main subject of the thread. Come on IOSH! Speak up. Cameron's implications that H&S is partly responsible for the riots is outrageous. I listened to his full speech on the TV and he definitely made link while standing in front of graffiti trying to get with the kids. Pity you are not allowed to make defamatory remarks about individuals on this forum because I have plenty for this man. Not to mention Chris Grayling who implied in one of his press releases that H&S is partly responsible for the recession!
