Has anyone got any ideas of opening road wagon (Container type) doors in a safe and controlled manner to avoid the contents from spilling out and potentially causing a serious incident. I know they should be secured in the first instance etc but because they are containers how can you make sure the contents are not up against the doors on opening

We load/unload 20 foot and 40 foot containers every couple of weeks, whilst like Clairel I would not condone using a slope it is possible for the driver to drop the front (i.e the end nearest the cab) of the container slightly to ensure that a slight bias that way is achieved.
What about using a pallet on the forks of a forklift truck positioned up against the container doors to keep them in place whilst the door lever is released and then slowly reversing the forklift truck to see if stuff is likely to spill out. I would also be talking to my suppliers to ensure that deliveries are delivered in such as way as to facilitate safe unloading.

Smart,
I would suggest that you have a webbing strap or a wire strop made that you place behind the locking bars (the verticle bars that hold the door shut), bring round the front of the locking bars and secure in the middle. You then lift up the custom catch, crack the inner right hand door bar slightly, then repeat on the outer RH doorbar. Fully release the inner, whilst easing open the outer you will know if there is any weight on the door but the strap/strop should prevent the door from swinging open.
Also remember as the door opens move back and turn your face away so you do not inhale whatever fumes have been trapped in the container during its journey
