Construction issue related to groundwork’s up to 8m deep. Current I am working in connection with on the ground works a project that has contaminated land issues and this conditions we have experience of and have in hand. However a new issue has appeared that of indications of petrol mixed in the ground water and the associated explosion risk, not indicated in any of the pre construction site investigation reports. Looking for a source of / past experience on ground works in contaminated land that contains residuals of petrol and potently a disused petrol tank last used circa 1900 ~ 1920s. Also looking for specialist hire of monitoring equipment over and above the standard gas monitors that we currently in use for confined space that do monitor for LEL.

We brought in an environmental consultant when we encountered a similar problem on a construction project. The area had previously been used as a storage & refuelling yard for mobile plant over a period of years, and in some cases the vehicles were not in the best state of repair (leaking fuel tanks). The consultant pegged out the intial remediation area, then monitored the dig to ensure all contaminated materials were removed. If you like, i can try to dig out some further details on this.

Ross I was involved with a similar experience a year or so back, leaking oil had contaminated an area we were excavating for piling and a new build project. Again, we called in a environmental chappie who advised that strictly speaking we had to trace back to the source and remediate the ground contamination. However, it was not possible because of adjacent railway lines. The problem was exasperated due to a nearby water course and local water table. It turned out the source of the leaking oil was very nearby, a disused oil tank which was part of the excavation works, therefore the excavation was encapsulated with concrete fill if I remember correctly.

Plenty of specialists out there, woudl consider also speaking to environment agency and ask them for the advice on how to approach it or at least direction into people who can assist.
