Can anyone assist.
A friend of mine is a lecturer (Mathematics & Engineering) at a college. He has now been asked to give lectures in H&S as well. He approached me about H&S training videos for his electrical and mechanical engineering students.
I was wondering if you possibly know of any good training videos on Youtube, and / or videos the college could purchase.

Adrian I work in a college and have frequently been asked about updating our H&S Training videos so I looked at many Vocam, Safetymedia, Barbour etc and eventually signed up to the Montie Safetycare range, as have a few colleges in Scotland.
One of the reasons I went for this option is that there are no licences involved so it can be accessed as many times as you want and it is updated at regulat intervals. The last update included 72 titles and covers every area from inductions to COSHH

IPAF do some good, downloadable vids on safety with MEWPS.

As always, best to ask permission before using in a classroom environment.
On my recent NEBOSH Dip course, the tutor made extensive use of the "Seconds from Disaster" type series you see on the documentary channels. They had purchased a license I hasten to add. These give good examples of where engineering failures lead to disaster, e.g. Clapham Rail and Space Shuttle Challenger.

A lecturer especially should know that to lecture on a subject you should know about that subject as well as know how to lecture; unless that is you are undertaking a 'parrot fashion' exercise
I advise that your friend get themselves some competence in the subject area

The BBC video on the Piper Alpha disaster is a good one to show engineers because it involves maintenance activities as well as safety systems.
You can buy it but I also know that it is on Youtube.
CSB (USA's Chemical Safety Board) do some excellent videos and they will send a DVD free of charge or you can download them. Again design is covered - such as on BP's Texas Refinery incident.

Adrian I attended an event in Glasgow on Wednesday and they had a speaker from Scottish Power who presented a video that they have put on their website about an accident when a maintenance PtW went wrong seriously injuring 3 operators.
There are no copyright issues and Scottish Power are happy for it to be used in any H&S training

Hope it is of use to you

Thanks for this link - one of those videos that makes you think about how that could happen to anyone of us.
